MATT CHASTAIN

OWNER/SENIOR DESIGNER

Over the past two decades, I have personally taken more than 1,000 projects from the initial design concept through construction and completion. Traveling throughout San Diego County, I’ve had the opportunity to work on nearly every style of home and property imaginable. After 20 years in the industry, there is very little I haven’t encountered—and that experience allows me to approach every new project with both creativity and practical knowledge.

Landscape design is truly my passion. My favorite part of what I do is creating something beautiful, functional, and completely unique to each homeowner. No two properties—or clients—are the same, and I believe the best outdoor spaces should feel like a natural extension of the home and the people who live there. The positive feedback I receive from clients continues to motivate me to refine my craft, push creative boundaries, and deliver an even better finished project each time.

With more than 20 years of experience in the nursery, landscape, and hardscape industries, I have designed and built virtually every type of outdoor environment—from complete landscape transformations to pools, water features, outdoor kitchens, cabanas, patios, hardscapes, and a wide variety of outdoor flooring and finish materials.

Over the years, I have also developed strong relationships with an exceptional network of skilled contractors and specialty trades. Those partnerships give us the resources and expertise to take on unique challenges, execute complex ideas, and continually expand what we are able to create for our clients.

After all these years, I still genuinely enjoy what I do. There is nothing more rewarding than taking a homeowner’s ideas, transforming them into a cohesive design, and ultimately seeing that vision come to life.

My education, experience, and background could not have prepared me better for the role I hold and value so highly at SD3D Landscape Design & Build.

Growing up in Northern California as one of eight children, with a contractor father and an artist mother, I spent much of my childhood—and many summers—building, creating, and learning firsthand how craftsmanship and creativity can work together. That early influence inspired me to pursue an education that blended the two, ultimately earning my degree in History of Art & Architecture from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where I developed a deep appreciation for design in both its historic and contemporary forms.

After owning and operating my own business for several years, I came to understand just how essential strong procedures, clear communication, organization, and thoughtful execution are to a successful operation. Those principles became the foundation of my professional career and continue to guide the way I approach every project today.

Later, I obtained my California Real Estate License for investment purposes, which further strengthened my belief that investing in the thoughtful design and improvement of your home can provide some of the greatest dividends—not only financially, but in the way you experience and enjoy your home every day.

I truly love the position I hold within SD3D and the opportunity it gives me to bring together design, construction, organization, and client relationships. I enjoy being part of the process that takes an idea from its earliest stages through execution and ultimately transforms a property into a space our clients love.
